All we need is to create some RISC OS news! There seems a lot of effort being put into new disc magazines, portals, and so on, but not enough happening for them to report.
Everybody, go write some PD software, or develop USB, or kidnap the Queen Mother, or something.

Back to the first post, a holiday? RISCOS.net was well, dead for a long time, and has been up for a month or two now, and hasn't picked up at all.
Don't get me wrong, we get a few hits, but not even a third of the hits of the others about.
And to top it all off, today the leased line it runs on is down, but the site is accessible, not through it's main address, but otherwise. and I can't access the update pages at all though :-(
Portals are good when they are working and actually get visitors. Otherwise it can be downheartening to the people running it when they get few hits to the site, so it's a precarious position that the webmasters are in. If MyRISCOS can get the visitors, it will be a very nice site (if they get a logo too!)
I think I've started babbling now :-)

Strangely enough I remember offering to write some programming tutorials for TIB, but apart from 1 poll to find out how many people would benefit from them it never got any further... |

I think most people who read TIB are 'appreciative' of TIB, but can see the massive shortcommings of AU.
It surprises me that there seem to be more blind-advocates of AU than blind-advocates of RISC OS!

Acorn User is a nice magazine and programming tutorials would both make an interesting read and be useful to a larger audience, I suspect, than TIB.
As for RISC OS advocates, I suspect many like it's plesant and efficient GUI, in-built programming languages and the software they use. |

I don't think a general C++ tutorial has much merit. People are far better off checking out places like
http://www.programmingtutorials.com/main.asp
Thinking in C++ is freely available at
http://www.mindview.net/Books/TICPP/ThinkingInCPP2e.html
and there are probably dozens of other sites out there.
What's lacking are RISC OS specific tutorials - it doesn't help though that there hasn't been a standard way to create applications since we all learnt about SWIs. RiscOS_Lib as supplied with Acorn CV4 has a reputation for being next to useless without the source code and the toolbox doesn't seem to have really taken off (Acorn really should have created a good class library to sit on it).
I remember a comment a long time ago by Andrew Rawnsley while he was still at RISC OS Ltd that they were looking into the possibility of low cost development kit based around GCC with the ResEd tools. Well I guess that fell through (to be fair to Andrew he only mooted the possibility and then left RISC OS Ltd). This is another area of concern to me - I know Pace own the C environment and the engineers there are trying to get it released but I don't see RISC OS Ltd doing anything - must be very hush hush ;)
I'm as guilty as anyone for not writing articles - my networking tutorial got cut short after one article. Then again this was partially because of a certain VOTI-Artex announcement.

Blind advocation is not equal to personal preference or opinion. Saying that it does, however, simply shows unwillingness to see anything else, which /is/ blind advocation. |
