New Editor for Acorn User: round 3 (updated)

Posted by Richard Goodwin on 09:43, 4/12/2001 | ,

This is a story that could run and run!

Step up to the plate Michael "Arenaman" Stubbs, well known for various RISC OS related projects including Melotech, which sells RISC OS hardware and software.

Having read a few of these things in the past few months, I'll just give a brief summary of the press release. As before, the new look and improved content is bigged up, and a new news editor is in place. Comments have been taken note of, and more are welcome at editor@acornuser.com.

Michael's a commited RISC OS fan, and so hopefully we now have someone in place that will take AU forward - and I can stop posting items on changes in staff at our only news stand magazine.

Update
The new news editor is Alex Singleton, a freelance journalist who has worked for a number of magazines in both the RISC OS arena and further afield. More info is available on the comments page.

Unregistered user Hmmm. As Mr Stubbs had made it to my kill file, I'm strongly suspecting the new AU shall make it to my bin.

However, I wish him luck. I don't think it'll be an easy task.

Unregistered user I'm pleased to be able to introduce myself as the new News Editor of Acorn User. I wrote for Acorn User as a columnist between 1994-5, and have written also for RISC User and Archive. Most of my writing has in recent years been for the PC press in magazines such as Personal Computer World, ComputerActive and PC Direct, where I have been writing a combination of features, tutorials, reviews and news analysis.

I would be very happy to hear from any readers with thoughts about AU's news coverage. Press releases can be sent to acornusernews@alexsingleton.com

Best regards,
Alex Singleton.

Unregistered user I wonder if you'll get shat on like the poor buggers who are still due money many months (years) after writing articles and not being paid. AU know who they are, yet seem happy to piss people off. Cruel.

Unregistered user Michael Stubbs?! Woo!

I just wonder how quickly 'MicroDigital User' will change to 'Castle User'... In fact, I wonder how long it will be before some anti-MD/pro-CTL editorial gets AU sued...

Michael Stubbs Message #89483, posted at 21:11, 4/12/2001, in reply to message #89482
Unregistered user Hello Stan. Acorn User will not side with either Castle nor MicroDigital. There will be no anti-MicroDigital editorials, nor any such theme running through the magazine. Should MD provide the Omega, it will be reviewed fair and square and, if it's fantastic, that's what will be stated. The magazine is not a vehicle for my personal opinions for or against any particular RISC OS company. I hope that clarifies things.

I'm sorry, but the last few comments have just made me laugh out loud in front of 100 students doing last-minute coursework :-)

Ah well, back to my last minute coursework. :-/

Unregistered user "Alex, how exactly are you going to be able to edito news when, let's face it, there isn't any ?"

It's all a question of being a decent reporter. I don't accept that there isn't any news. When I wrote the business column in Acorn User, most of the news-type pieces came from phone calls, and very few from press releases. All it takes is some effort.

Unregistered user Hi Michael,

Thanks for your clarification.

Will the reviews be back to the old standard? If you are unsure as to what I mean, please consult any new Acorn computer reviews between the Electron, B+ or Master 128, up to, say, the Risc PC. All the reviews since have been SERIOUSLY poor. Please take note of this.

And why isn't Acorn User in WH Smiths?!

Unregistered user Hi,
Good luck to the new editor of the Acorn User. There was no doubt in my mind that the magazine needed a change. Will there be any changes to the design (appearance) of the magazine? The current design layout could have be used as toilet paper then entered for a difficult spot-the-difference competition.

John Hoare Message #89491, posted at 13:26, 5/12/2001, in reply to message #89490
Unregistered user The main problem with the page layout is... how can I put this... overuse of white space. You could get about double the info on each page if it was redesigned.

Michael Stubbs Message #89492, posted at 13:47, 5/12/2001, in reply to message #89491
Unregistered user I will do my very best to ensure that all reviews are to the highest standards.

Acorn User *is* in WHSMiths. Send an email to editor@acornuser.com stating which one you can't find it in and we'll see what can be done about it. I would like to ask everyone to email me if you have a problem and not just comment on the Internet; if you email me, I can try and do something about it. Ta :-)

And have a magazine of half as many pages? That would make it pretty thin I fear.
