Seems like a good month for small but interesting news items. The BETT show has now ended, and as promised I've got a few photos of the new RiscStation and Cumana hardware. The portable was again a PC with screensavers, but looks good; the Cumana Slym was in a nice prototype case that proved very popular. It seems that ArgoNet are trying to make up for past mistakes by offering shareholders in the failing Argo Group free shares in Imparo, who bought ArgoNet from Argo Group. The Argo Group shares which people who invested originally in ArgoNet now own are being devalued so that the veture capital people can claw their money back, and so won't be worth much for small investors. The document I've seen doesn't actually state if this is a one-for-one deal, but it's better than nothing. It's been reported on other sites, so I guess I should post something here even though it's not quite finished. There's a test version of OpenSSH for RISC OS available from Peter Naulls' website. Note that this is a test version, and not a proper release; however, after giving my machine a 2MB wimpslot, making sure I'd got the right SharedU(nix)Lib module in my !System, and a slight change to the login script on my Linux box and I now have a very nice, apparently fully working SSH2 login from the Nettle telnet client. Woohoo! Nice one! And finally, I was about to put up the poll to find the riscos.org.uk logo, but there are still a couple more entries to come - it'll be up RSN, honest! If you're reading this on Monday 14th Jan, try getting your files to me by tomorrow and I'll still include them.

Maybe I'm just a sad geek, but the see-through Cumana box looks quite tempting too! :) |

Yeah, nice pics of the laptop - any more floating about your hard drive? (Specifically piccies of the case shut and side-on pics)

Actually yeah, I agree about the Slym, very nice. Let's hope that it's true that some schools are going to purchase more RISC OS hardware again. |

Sorry, I just dumped the entire lot to the site. I just went over to riscos.org and they don't have any either :(
BTW, has anyone else noticed that the monitor cable is plugged directly into the laptop, not into a docking station which the adverts insist is necessary to add this functionality...? |

I've only just read the bit about the Slym's transparant casing might make it to the production run! That would be excellent! |

No way! :) I think it looks really nice - much nicer than it looks on their website anyway. I just hope they will remove the Windows logo from the keys! :) That would actually almost be enough to put me off buying it!

I know - hence the comment that you don't have any piccies of the laptop closed! :) |

Where are the ROM's on that Slym board? I can't see them anywhere!

Ah, they're using secret magic lucky ROMs that don't show up on this plain of existance ;)
I don't think they're using regular ROMs; I'm guessing that the four squares to the left of the memory (viewed from front) could be some kind of Flash memory. |

Eh, I just checked the RS site, and it states:
"Compact Flash Onboard containing RISCOS4 and Utilities."
which would imply that you can exchange the CF card with another one, maybe running linux or (AAAH!) windoze? Or does the 'Onboard' mean, soldered? :)
It would be very cool if you could just swap your OS..
The casing looks nice, as do the screenshots (are they from an actual ROS4 screen?) |

Soldering a compact flash cartridge to the motherboard would be very very silly indeed.
Oh, this is RiskStation we're talking about! Whoops. Mustn't make assumptions. |

Compact flash must be a mis-type - it's unsuitable for long term data storage - particularly where the corruption of even one bit will render the machine useless.
The must mean Flash ROM. Surely? |

Corruption of many of the bits of the ROM wiuldn't cause it to be unusable, perhaps even not be noticed (it might be in a bit of code which is never used, or a message that isn't ever displayed, or even part of a sprite). However, I think they were probably thinking of flash rom and thought they'd say "compact" without realising what it meant. Who knows though :) |

Still, the RON is delivered on CF, for the Netbook.. so it might as well be that it is not a typo :) which would make the RS portable quite 'portable' :) |
