A recent post on the Newsgroups lead me to a new emulator for RISC OS called enterprisingly enough 'Emulator'!
It turned out to be just what I've been looking for ever since I ditched my old A5000 and bought this new-fangled RiscPC thing which broke so many of my old favourite games.
Although many of them were eventually patched to work with modern hardware, many of the older ones like 'Zelanites' and 'Killer Bugs' never were and so remained unplayable until now.
Emulator by Jan D Boer is an Acorn Archimedes emulator for RISC OS, specifically StrongArm equipped RiscPCs.
As you can see from the screenshots, a couple of my favourite games are running perfectly if a little slowly in multi-tasking mode. A single-tasking mode is available and does speed things up but can have problems with some games at the moment.
The emulator is very easy to get started with, just run the program and you're away. Loading of software is via disc-images, but the RiscPCs floppy drive can be read and disc-images created from it very easily indeed.
Unfortunately I got rid of most of my really old games sometime ago (didn't see the point in keeping them, doh!) so I'll have to track down replacements now.
Sound is not yet supported and the emulator probably won't work on the Iyonix yet. Omega users will probably be in hog heaven with it (you lucky devils, both of you!) but us paupers with standard StrongArms and Kinetics will just have to hope that Jan can squeeze more speed out of it in future to make our lives complete. Thanks Jan.
